Draft chapter 4. Sallis comes back for the ledger tonight.
I drafted chapter 4. Sallis comes back at ten to midnight, and Ines gives him a true answer that is not the one he wants. It ends on the page cut from her father's ledger.

Story checkPat gives Ines the parcels-office key in chapter 3, but chapter 4 has it still on its hook.
An invented example, with characters from one of the open-source Story Skills example books.

A story check that reads like an editor

It reads the whole book as an editor would, and finds what does not hold together before a reader does: a character in two places at once, an answer that comes before its question, a question that no chapter answers.

Invented examples, with the characters of the book above.

  • Two places at once

Ines locks the parcels office at ten to midnight in chapter 4, but chapter 5 has her at home at that same hour.

  • An answer before its question

Chapter 3 says who cut the page from the ledger, but the page is first missed in chapter 4.

  • A question still open

Chapter 1 asks who left the brown case in the office. No chapter answers it yet.

How it works

  1. Tell it your idea

A sentence is enough. Your writing partner asks what it needs, and fills the gaps with choices you can change.

  2. Plan it together

It sets up the premise, the cast, the places and an outline, then plans each chapter before a word of prose.

  3. Draft, revise and check

Draft chapters together, edit them yourself, and let the story check find what does not add up.

What you get

  • It remembers everything

It keeps every character, place, clue and promise to the reader in a story bible, which you can see in the panel beside the chat.

  • You have the last word

Edit any chapter yourself. Undo the partner's last change, or go back to any earlier version of the book.

  • Bring the book you started

Paste in a draft, or bring a Word, LibreOffice, RTF, Markdown or text file, or a zipped Scrivener project. Plothold splits it into chapters for you.

  • Take your book with you

Download it as an EPUB, a PDF, a Word file, a standard manuscript or Markdown, whenever you like.

  • Private by design

Your chats go only to AI hosts that keep no copy of them and do not train on them. No ads, and no analytics or tracking from other companies.

How we keep your writing private
  • Tested methods of the craft

The partner follows the open-source Story Skills: tested methods for premise, plot, character, scene and revision.

Questions

Does it write the book for me?
Only as much as you ask. Some writers draft every word and use the partner to plan and check; others draft together and revise.
Who owns what I write?
You do. We store and process your writing only to run Plothold for you, and we never use it to train AI models.
What kinds of books?
Fiction of any genre, from short stories to novels, in English or any other language the partner writes.
Can I bring a book I have started?
Yes. Paste it in, or bring a Word, LibreOffice, RTF, Markdown or text file, or a zipped Scrivener project. Plothold splits a file into chapters at its headings, such as “Chapter 1”, and a Scrivener project at its folders.
What happens when the trial ends?
Your books stay yours: you can still read, edit and download them. The writing partner answers again when you take the plan.
Who makes Plothold?
Daniel Dewhurst, who runs it from Cheshire, in England. Your email to hello@plothold.com comes to the person who makes it.
Who is it for?
Anyone who writes fiction, from a first idea to a working novelist. Plothold is for adults: you must be 18 or older, and so must the readers you share a book with. You can still write books for younger readers.
